The Women's Fed Uni Beavers side were able to storm through the week undefeated leading into the finals on Thursday & Friday which where they were to take it up against the best University's the Games had seen in quite some time. In the Semi-Final Fed Uni took on Monash in what was to be match of the week with it going down to the last 5 minutes tied before Fed Uni were able to get 2 last minute goals to go out victors 5.5 (35) to Monash 3.4 (22) to go into the Gold Medal Match.
Bryce Curnow lead from the front all weekThe Men's side came up against a foundation club in Melbourne University in the Semi Final but it would be a huge ask competing against a quality outfit. Unfortunately the men's side were able to take it up to the Melbourne Uni outfit who ran out the game 19-point victors. The Fed Uni men's side would now play RMIT in the Bronze Medal match and it would be a huge ask after 4 full days of games through the pool & finals stages. Unfortunately a depleted men's side would go down to RMIT 8.10 (58) to 4.5 (29). It was a really guttsy effort by the Men's side to take it up to some of the really strong outfits the Games have seen in quite some time and credit must go to the entire side who faught hard all week looking for the illusive Gold Medal. The Men's side had 3 players inducted into the Green and Gold Team of the week with Jordan Staley, Jacob Werts & Linc Barnes who all had really strong weeks for the Fed Uni side.
The Women's side going into Gold Medal match being undefeated had huge expectations however they were able to come out racing in the first half to take a 3-goal lead after a real dominating half against the RMIT Red Backs. They knew RMIT would come back strong in the second and that they did kicking the first 2 goals to get within striking distance. Fed Uni knew they had to dig deep to stop the raging Red Backs as they through everything they had at them but several Fed Uni players stood tall thanks to Jordi Ivey, Carrie Jones & Kaitlyn Ashmore to guide the Beavers to a 17-point win. Not only was this the first Gold Medla for the Football Club but Federation University Australia's first Gold Medal on record. Huge credit must go to Mel McCartney who has taking a playing coach role over the past few years & was able to put the side together to reach this success.
"We're extremely pleased with the results throughout the competition, for us Beavers and Fed Uni. We took each game at a time and this helped us concentrate on specifics which allowed for us to play good footy during the finals" Mel McCartney said.
The Australian University Games head to Gold Coast in 2015 with the Women's side looking for Back-to-Back Gold Medals & the Men's already hungry to get that illusive Gold Medal they have been working so hard towards.
